Nitrous oxide emission from full-scale municipal aerobic granular sludge

The nitrous oxides emission was measured over 7 months in the full-scale aerobic granular sludge plant Dinxperlo, Netherlands. Nitrous oxide concentrations were bulk liquid and off-gas of Nereda® reactor. Combined with batch wise operation reactor, this gave a high information density better insight into N2O general. average factor 0.33% based on total nitrogen concentration influent. yearly estimated to be between 0.25% 0.30%. is comparable continuous activated plants, using flocculent sludge, it low compared other sequencing systems. variability increased when reactor temperature below 14 °C, showing higher factors during winter period. A change process control period reduced variability, reducing level summer Different might necessary at temperatures obtain consistently emission. Rainy weather conditions lowered factor, also dry flow batches following rainy batches. This attributed first flush from sewer start conditions, resulting temporarily loading.
